Return of the Dead is a map that aims to capture the original essence of the Call of Duty zombies mode.

When creating the initial sketches, I made sure to keep these important aspects in mind.​

- How will Paths be Balanced
- Understanding the Flow of Gameplay
- Player Sightlines
- Chokepoints​

It was important players did not become too strong too quickly.

This was handled with player points.

Doors and weapons are purchased with points earned from enemies killed.

I wanted an atmosphere that supported a thick fog. Using thick trees and foliage I managed to give the impression of a large surrounding forest (Figure A).​

For the environmental design of the rooms, I went with a military theme. This building was once a nursing home but was repurposed as a military outpost in World War II.​

My goal was to make the level feel like it once was an inhabited location (Figure C).

This door was intended to give the player access to looping around the second floor once the power was restored. (Figure D.)

​Luckily, removing it did not affect the player experience and instead benefitted progression by keeping it balanced.

It was kept by not giving players too much freedom to navigate the level.

The unique set pieces were a crucial part of helping players navigate.

Beginning with the waterfall, we constructed numerous unique areas designed to orient the player while fitting into the game's context.

POST MORTEM

This project has helped me improve my development process and appreciation for intricate details. I've gained experience becoming accustomed to a new engine in a short time. ​

This was a great level to develop and I'm aiming to create even greater ones in the future.
